What is the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC)?
The WOTC is a federal hiring incentive available to employers who hire individuals from designated groups—which include veterans, SNAP or SSI recipients, long term TANF recipients, and more. Tax credits range from $1,200 up to $9,600 depending on the group and hours worked (minimum 120 hours in the first year).

TCW provides all the tools needed to seamlessly help your clients claim the Work Opportunity Tax Credit. As the facilitator of our tools, you would charge your clients accordingly for the work performed. We can provide you with suggested guidelines, but ultimately how you charge is up to you.
You manage the TCW portal, and set up individual client accounts. Each client will have access to their own accounts, where they will be able to enter in new candidates and hires. Our system automatically generates an email to the job seekers with a link to our WOTC screening questionnaire. If a candidate is eligible and is also hired, we take care of the hiring paperwork and submitting the claim to the state. When we hear back from the state, we will provide you with the necessary information for you to calculate the WOTC credit for your client. Our online tools will guide you in this process. Lastly, we will automatically generate the IRS Form 5884 for the client’s signature.
Setting up your first client is easy, and generally takes our trusted tax advisor partners about 15 minutes. The calculations will vary depending on the number of WOTC eligible hires and the type of hire, but our intuitive platform makes it easy.
Each eligible hire can generate up to $9,600 of tax credits to the client, with most credit hires resulting in eligibility for an amount between $2,000 and $4,000. For example if you have a client with 15 employees and a lot of turnover, they may hire 2 to 4 eligible people every year. The client may net an additional $10k+ of tax credits.
We charge a nominal annual fee to access our platform. Also, for each candidate that your clients submit to the state for WOTC approval, we charge a small fee. We provide you with an itemized list per client, so our trusted tax advisor partners can bill the cost of submission back to their clients.
- WOTC is a non-refundable general business credit that directly reduces federal income tax owed—dollar for dollar.
- Claimed via Form 5884 and passed through Form 3800 as part of the general business credit.
- Applies at the entity level (e.g., C-corp, S-corp, partnership) and can be carried back 1 year or forward up to 20 years if not fully used.
Yes. Once the state certifies the employee, we provide a completed Form 5884 to include with their return.
