How much is the credit worth?
  • Most employers receive around $2,400 per qualified hire. That’s based on a 40% credit on the first $6,000 in wages—so 0.40 × $6,000 = $2,400.
  • If the employee works fewer than 400 hours, the credit drops to 25%, or up to $1,500.
  • Some hires—like certain veterans—can qualify for up to $9,600 in credits if they meet specific criteria and wage thresholds.
Example:
If you hire four qualifying employees at $2,400 each, that’s $9,600 off your federal tax bill. If one of those hires qualifies for the higher veteran credit, you save even more.
